{"id":457,"date":"2009-03-15T10:52:32","date_gmt":"2009-03-15T17:52:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.josemarquez.com\/xsml\/?p=457"},"modified":"2009-03-15T10:52:32","modified_gmt":"2009-03-15T17:52:32","slug":"the-information-age","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.josemarquez.com\/etc\/2009\/03\/15\/the-information-age\/","title":{"rendered":"surviving the information age"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Never mind the cracks forming on the ad-based revenue model, here&#8217;s the root problem: a press that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boingboing.net\/2009\/03\/14\/thorstein-veblen-pre.html\">doesn&#8217;t inform<\/a> will not survive the information age.<\/p>\n<p>Jon Stewart isn&#8217;t very funny when he&#8217;s lecturing his fellow entertainers on CNN (<a href=\"http:\/\/transcripts.cnn.com\/TRANSCRIPTS\/0410\/15\/cf.01.html\">then<\/a>) and CNBC (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.talkingpointsmemo.com\/news\/2009\/03\/jon_stewart_interview_with_jim_cramer.php\">now<\/a>) but that doesn&#8217;t mean he&#8217;s not right. Nor is it exclusively a political matter: access to information is now &#8220;baked in&#8221; to the way that many parts of our global economy work. <\/p>\n<p>It may be that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/stories\/2005\/10\/22\/opinion\/polls\/main965223.shtml\">a majority<\/a> of Americans reject evolution but they&#8217;re almost certainly out-numbered by consumers in Asia and Europe who have no similar prejudice against science. <\/p>\n<p>Every week, the anonymous members of  China&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/03\/02\/business\/media\/02economist.html\">Eco Team<\/a> risk life and liberty to translate the Economist; a vote of confidence that all but assures <em>that<\/em> magazine will survive another century.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Never mind the cracks forming on the ad-based revenue model, here&#8217;s the root problem: a press that doesn&#8217;t inform will not survive the information age.
